Compostable T-shirts from Basel

The design of the new Feb2nd T-shirts is timeless, clean and minimalist. The T-shirts are not only absolutely on trend in terms of fashion, they also set new standards in terms of sustainability. They are produced without harmful substances, are biodegradable, compostable and 100% circular, making them particularly skin-friendly.

The latest (ultra) fast fashion trends are created under enormous time and cost pressure. It seems that fair production is impossible to implement under these challenging conditions. However, the fashion industry is changing and the implementation of the EU Green Deal aims to produce clothing sustainably, fairly and free from harmful substances and to make repairable, recycled and circular textiles the norm by 2030. Textile manufacturers are to be held accountable along the entire value chain of their products. Slow fashion instead of fast fashion is the new future.

Microplastics are a major problem in the fashion industry. Synthetic fibers are often used to produce clothing as cost-effectively as possible. Synthetic fibers are made from petroleum and are generally not biodegradable. Microplastics end up in the water with every wash cycle. These particles are so tiny that sewage treatment plants cannot filter them out. For this reason, sustainable and recyclable clothing is becoming increasingly important.

Feb2nd T-shirts are not only environmentally friendly, but also locally and fairly produced. Thus, the T-shirts labeled "Made in Germany" are not produced in the Far East like most of our clothing, but locally in Burladingen, Germany. The German manufacturer Trigema is a pioneer in sustainable and recyclable fashion. In collaboration with the international environmental institute EPEA , Trigema developed the first fully biodegradable T-shirt and received the 2014 Cradle to Cradle® Innovation Award in New York for it. Unfortunately, until then, the production of recyclable clothing still remains a matter of innovation.

The Cradle to Cradle® concept is modeled on nature. Everything nature produces can be recycled and returned to the natural cycle. For example, flower seeds produce new flowers, and fallen leaves in autumn become nutrients for other organisms. Cradle to Cradle® means from cradle to cradle and is based on closed cycles that produce no waste and preserve valuable raw materials for us and future generations.

The international Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold certification guarantees fair and environmentally friendly production and 100% recyclability. All materials used in Cradle to Cradle Gold Certified® products are free of toxic substances, harmless to nature or humans, and compostable. At the end of their life, the product can be returned to Feb2nd for recycling and reintegration into the cycle.

The international standard Cradle to Cradle Gold Certified®

The Cradle to Cradle® concept consists of the biological and technical cycle.

Biological cycle

Consumer goods are designed to be reused repeatedly in biological cycles. When they reach the end of their lifespan, they decompose into organic nutrients and promote plant growth. These renewable raw materials, in turn, form the basis for new products.

Technical cycle

After fulfilling their original function, consumer goods can enable the production of new goods in the technical cycle. For this purpose, they are disassembled and sorted according to material type. Users/consumers only purchase the relevant services, e.g., washing machines. The materials remain the property of the manufacturer, who returns the individual consumer goods to the technical cycle at the end of their life.

To improve recycling, product quality must be optimized. This includes considering how products could later be reused or fully recycled during the design phase. The Cradle to Cradle® product standard considers material health, product circularity, water and soil conservation, clean air and climate protection, and social justice in the design and manufacturing process.

Cradle to Cradle Linear economy illustration Feb2nd.JPG

Since the industrial revolution, processing from raw materials to finished products has been linear, ultimately creating waste. The linear economy is reaching its limits as resources shrink, some are soon depleted, and mountains of waste grow. In the circular economy, however, no waste is produced. All ingredients are considered nutrients and can be integrated into the corresponding cycle once their purpose has been fulfilled.
